Desiccants

Desiccants are hygroscopic substances that can adsorb moisture, liquids, or gases from the surrounding environment. The most commonly found Desiccants are Silica Gel, Activated Clay, and Molecular Sieve.


Silica Gel


Our Silica Gels meets various specifications and are used in the Pharmaceutical, Medical, Food, and Electronic industries. Silica Gel comes in non-indicating and indicating forms. Indicating Silica Gel changes colour when saturated which lets the user know when replacement is needed.

Non-Indicating Silica Gel:


Silica Gel is a porous form of silica made from sodium silicate and a mineral acid. The internal structure of Silica Gel is made up of interconnected microscopic pores which attract and hold water by physical adsorption and capillary condensation, allowing it to adsorb up to 35% of its weight of water. These gels are non-corrosive, non-toxic nature and are approved by the US government for use in food and drug packaging. It performs best at room temperature 21 - 32?C and high humidity 60 – 90%. Its size and shape does not change as it adsorbs moisture.

Blue Indicating Silica Gel:


Blue-Indicting Silica Gel is impregnated with cobalt chloride, a heavy metal salt, which changes from blue to pink as the desiccant becomes saturated. This visually warns users of the need for replacement. This product is suitable for use with Electronic equipment with non-dusting packing.

Orange Indicating Silica Gel (Environmental Gel):


This gel is impregnated with a safe, cobalt chloride free organic indicator which displays an orange/yellow colour when active, and changes to green when the desiccant becomes saturated. This type is suitable for using with food or pharmaceutical products.

Molecular Sieve


Molecular sieve is a adsorbent containing tiny pores of a precise and uniform size, and is used as an adsorbent for gases and liquids. Because of their crystalline composition, it will yield virtually water-free products. These empty adsorption cavities allow selective adsorption. Molecules small enough to pass through the pores are absorbed while larger molecules are not. Molecular sieve can absorb water up to 22% of its own weight. Molecular sieve has a high re-activation temperature and moisture locked is not easily return to the ambience. They are usually used in bulk in filtration systems or packaged in sachets for dry packing.

Activated Clay


Activated Clay is a natural occurring porous mineral which has been dried to produce an adsorbent material. It is an efficient desiccant that works well within normal temperature and humidity levels. It is usually low-cost in comparison to other chemically produced desiccants, such as silica gel and molecular sieve. A disadvantage is its tendency to release moisture back to the surrounding environment. This may occur at temperatures as low as 50?C and the probability increases as the temperature rises. Hence, application involving high temperatures is not recommended.

Activated Alumina


Activated Alumina is a ceramic compound used as a desiccant. It is a very permeable form of aluminum oxide with high surface area (350m²/g). Unlike other desiccants such as calcium chloride, Activated Alumina adsorbs contaminants in liquids and gases without any change in form i.e. it will not soften or disintegrate when immersed in liquids.

Activated Carbon


Activated Carbon contains high surface area per unit weight. It can produce an internal surface area of 800 to 1200m²/g, making it an extremely efficient and effective adsorbent. It does not absorb moisture but is commonly used to absorb gas particles (odour). To have multiple functions, custom blends of Activated Carbon and a different type of desiccant in a sachet is possible.

Available in different shape and sizes, such as round and oval. The active ingredients of desiccants are incorporated into the polymer. It offers an air-tight, leak proof, and controlled environment to help maintain product stability and prolong shelf-life. It can also be customised to a shape, size, and colour.

Using a certain technology to combine precise amounts of desiccant with polymer to produce rigid packaging with built-in moisture protection. This moisture protective packaging is ideal for pharmaceutical, diagnostic, and various other applications.

Available in almost any shape or sizes. It can be cut accordingly and contoured to reach inaccessible spaces. It can also serve as an insulator or fixture, providing a uniform environment for complete moisture control. Paper Desiccant has packaging applications in photographic films, cryogenic pumps, dried foods, pharmaceuticals, electronic components, instruments, and spare parts.

Canister Desiccant is silica filled into a cylindrical-shaped plastic housing with a ventilated card covering the top. A range of canister size is available to easily accommodate most bottle sizes. It is the most widely accepted desiccant form used in the pharmaceutical industry.

Art Sorb
It is a moisture-sensitive silica material which absorbs and desorbs moisture in order to offset changes in relative humidity. In the range of 40 – 70% RH, it has over five times the moisture buffering capacity of regular Silica Gel. Art Sorb is a highly efficient humidity control agent for the conservation of art. It will protect your heritage for future generations.

moisture adsorbing polymers Moisture Adsorbing Polymers
Moisture Adsorbing Polymers are an alternative to conventional desiccants in sachet or other forms. It is engineered from the combination of polymers and adsorbent desiccants, allowing it to adsorb moisture, odours, and organic volatiles. It can be moulded and machined to suit applications where a desiccant is required to fit the available space that has a complex shape. The polymer can be readily fixed in place, using screw fasteners, adhesives or other mechanical retention methods. Low cost prototypes are available and it can be produced in low or high volume quantities. Typical applications include electronic, electrical, optical, telecommunications equipment, and packaging.

Moisture Adsorbing Boardmoisture adsorbing board
Moisture Adsorbing Board is a practical alternative to conventional desiccant bags for applications where space is limited. The narrow thickness of the board allows it to access apertures which would be inaccessible to desiccant bags. Moisture Adsorbing Board can be cut to any size for easy installation and fixing. Moisture Adsorbing Board is available in a standard sheet size of 295mm x 205mm x 1.6mm or can be cut, punched or formed to meet customer's specific requirements.
