Vapour Corrosion Inhibitors (VCI)

How VCI Works

Corrosion inhibitor compounds vaporize from the paper or film. They are attracted to the charged surface of the metal by virtue of their polar orientation. The VCI molecules align on the surface of the metal to a depth of 3 to 5 molecules. This layer of molecules passivates the charged surface and creates a barrier that prevents oxidation. The corrosion cell (the flow of electrons in the metal and the flow of ions in the electrolytic surface layer) is unable to establish itself. Corrosion is halted.




Airtight packing is not required!

Simply store or ship metal parts in VCI packaging. When the parts are unwrapped, the protective layer immediately begins to dissipate. The metal parts are clean, corrosion-free and ready to use. No washing, dipping or cleaning is necessary.

The VCI molecules migrate into recesses and hard to reach areas on even the most complex shapes. The molecules build up on the metal surface until a continuous barrier has formed on the metal part.

The chemicals in Daubert Cromwell products are volatile. When metals are wrapped or packaged in VCI, the chemicals volatilize in the packaging environment, forming a protective molecular layer on the surface of the metal. This protective layer serves as a barrier, preventing moisture, salt, dirt, oxygen, and other corrosion causing materials from depositing directly on the metal and causing rust and corrosion.

Daubert Cromwell VCI papers come in a variety of grades. Larger or irregular shaped products should be protected with heavier grades of paper, while smaller parts can use lighter basis weights. Several Daubert Cromwell products feature special substrates that combine a rust preventative with barrier packaging. Barrier coated papers and films protect against moisture and grease; laminated grades afford heavy duty protection against the environment and serve as a rust preventative.



Daubert Cromwell offers the most comprehensive selection of VCI papers for industry. Papers treated with the safe, proprietary chemistry will prevent corrosion on the protected metals for years, without need for expensive coatings or ineffective methods such as desiccants or untreated barrier paper. Simply store or ship the metal parts in VCI paper. Parts will stay clean, dry and rust-free.

Different metals require different types of protection. For ferrous metals needing long-term corrosion protection, choose Nox-Rust® Vapor Wrapper®, Ferro-Pak®, or Protek Wrap®, depending on environmental conditions and duration of storage. Uniwrap® MPI papers provide a multi-purpose corrosion inhibitor for short and long-term protection of combination ferrous/non-ferrous metals. For specialty metals, use Coppertex® or Alumitex®. Use reinforced papers such as scrim or steel wrap where extra strength is required. Silver components in electronics, automotive, and other industries benefit from anti-tarnish protection of Silver Saver® and Silver-Guard® papers.

VCI film products provide proven corrosion protection. Through volatilization and contact, the VCI chemicals protect metal parts against the corrosive effects of moisture, salt and other contaminants while they are in process, storage or transit.

How does VCI film work? The corrosion inhibitors are extruded right into the polyethylene film, not superficially applied. As a result, the volatile and contact inhibitors provide long-term corrosion protection for the most intricate and hard-to-reach surfaces. The corrosion protection is clean, non-discernible, with no strong chemical odor.

VCI film is transparent for easy inspection and identification of parts. It will not affect the performance of the protected metal, and the parts are ready to use immediately after removal from the packaging without additional cleaning.
